Have you been resisting the pull of social media? It can be hard to resist Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all the other time sinks on the internet. But it doesn’t have to be like that. The 21st century job search is quickly migrating to social media platforms so if you want to find a job online is the place to be. So how can you find a job online? Here are some things to consider.

Increase your networking sphere.

The first step toward finding a job using social media is to make sure you have the right connections. Start with LinkedIn. Connect with former coworkers and managers. This automatically creates a sphere of influence. Now you’re just two degrees away from all of their contacts. Now, look up industry leaders in your area or others who may have insights and make those connections as well.

Build an online brand.

Next, buy your own URL. This is the web address that you can use for all of your online marketing. Most people use some combination of their first and last name. If you own this domain name you can avoid negative connotations with other brands or people. Create a website as a portfolio and add a blog to position yourself as a thought leader in your industry.

Know which platforms to use and which to avoid.

The problem with social media is that there is a lot of it and it is easy to get overwhelmed. Most professionals advise to stick with the basics and supplement them with others that are a fit for the industry. Start with LinkedIn and Facebook. Then, select others based on your experience. For example, if you’re a graphic designer you may also want to be on Pinterest because it is a popular visual media site.

Stay active.

Finally, social media only works if you’re on it. Lots of people create a LinkedIn profile and then never log into the site again. This is the first and worst mistake. LinkedIn works online like face to face networking works in a community. You need to constantly make connections, participate in discussions, and have a presence for people to remember you and contact you.
